Today at 10:45 AM, Central European Time (3 hours ago), the road bridge that was currently under reconstruction fell on the train tracks in the town of Studenka. Just seconds later, the EuroCity train No. 108 “Comenius” from Krakow to Prague, running at 135 kilometers per hour, collided with the collapsed structure of the bridge. The locomotive and several cars were derailed. At least 10 people were killed and at least 100 were injured in the accident. The rescuers are still evacuating people from the wreck of the train. The scene of the accident is sealed by the police. The wounded are carried by ambulance cars and helicopters to all available hospitals. The total number of victims may get higher.
Other trains in this section are halted, and many hours’ delay is expected. The Czech railways will try to run at least long distance trains through detour lines.
