Backpacking Europe Summer 09
Posted on: Tue, 01/07/2008 - 02:26
Hi All,
My girl friends and I(guy) plan to backpack Europe next summer. I would like some suggestions on where to party! I love to go out and party more than visiting museums.
1) So, where are the friendly and hyped places?
2) Also, I have a year to plan this trip. What can I do NOW to prepare for the summer of next year?
3)If I plan to travel for 6 weeks and go out twice a week, how would you think that would cost? Or would $3,500 cover the entire trip excluding airfare?
Thanks,
Oth

I will never understand why people go to Europe to “party”. That can be done easily at home and is much more cost efficient. But…whatever floats your boat, right? Amsterdam, Berlin and Prague are all hot party locations from what I gather. Look into those places. I’m sure someone else will have info for you as well so keep checking back.
Just do some basic research. Read over some guidebooks at a bookstore or library. If you’re interested in Amsterdam check out the book Joe Pauker’s Get Lost! the Cool Guide to Amsterdam. Amazon.com sells it for around $12. It’s aimed at the budget traveler and I thought it was more useful than the Fodor’s guide. I like the Lonely Planet edition too.
Save lots of cash. There’s no telling what airfare will cost next summer with oil prices on the rise and if you’re American the USD you’ll be leaving with won’t be worth shit so you’ll want to have a nice nest egg. If you’re going for sure it may not be a bad idea to get some Euros now incase the dollar tanks even more.
I honestly don’t know how far $3500 will get you. Most of that depends on how frugal you are. Back in Oct ’06 I spent around $2k for a week in Amsterdam (including airfare and hostel). But I also had a few major expenditures and I lost some money as well which sucked balls.
That about covers it from my perspective. Research is the most importan part. Good luck.
Go to your local library and/or book store. Broswe books on Europe and/or books on individual countries. Browse the internet. Go to www.flickr.com, type in “Italy” or “Britain”, sort by “most interesting”, see if anything catches your eye. Lurk around here at Eurotrip. Use the search function, see what itineraries have been planned and/or suggested on previous threads. RESEARCH. Look up different countries, cities, regions, islands, towns, districts. Have fun looking up places, researching, and learning.
1) If your going to party, go to Prague, and if your going there, go to the club Duplex! Went there 2 nights in a row at the cost of $150 US a night and got plastered with my mates. That club goes off!!! But be prepared to spend a few dollars, i was buying the cheapest beer all night and it still cost me heaps. you wanna go with like $250 a night so you can get all the wicked cocktails they serve up. But the top partying destinations for me would be Prague and Ios in Greece. Herd Amsterdam is tops too. I never really had the money to go out and didn’t all that much so when i did i made it a big one. If you happen to be in the area of either pamplona during san fermin or munich during oktoberfest then they are a must.
2) Keep researching, you got plenty of time!
3) And im not sure about the funds, I was on about a max of 50 euro a day including accommodation and that’s not including going out. so you could use that as a ruff guide if your planning on staying in hostels and only eat cheap food a max of 3 times a day. I worked it out to be about $3360 US for basic living expenses and most transport for the 6 weeks. Then add on top of that money for going out, any souvenirs, random expenses, I would think that $4500 might be a better number to look at to be on the safer side.
no regrets…
Try to buy your airfare now!! I can guarantee you that it will be much higher next year!!
$3,500 will not cover 6 weeks if you’re looking to party. I predict the dollar will be worth half the price of the Euro by next summer which leaves you with a little over forty euro a day, and you haven’t even factored in hostels. So what can you do now? Get a part time job and a save a few more grand.
