I want to go from Barcelona to Los Angeles in late December (on or after the 17th) and return about a month later (it would be great if I could stop in Philly for a few days on the way back, around the 12th of January).
On ITA British Airways offers BCN-LAX trip for about 650 euros, which isn’t bad. Does anyone think that I can do any better? The round trip is straight forward, but if I want to land in Philly on the way back everything seems to get 100% more complicated, and about 50% more expensive.
Landing in Philly on the return leg adds about 300 euros to the cost of the flight, which seems a little outrageous to me.
I was thinking that I could take the bus from Philly to NYC and then fly from there, but the prices turn out about the same.
Any ideas on how to go about this?
Thanks

It will most likely be cheapest and easiest if you do an “open-jaw” itinerary, aka “multi-stop” — BCN-LAX, PHL-BCN, and then add LAX-PHL separately. Mobissimo and Kayak have very good multi-city flight searches. ITA will help you narrow down cheapest travel days, then try them with Kayak and Mobissimo. Orbitz also has a very good +/- 3 day travel window search.
