So if I have a Global Eurail pass 15 day 2 month flexi pass, does this mean I have a free fair with Superfast Ferries? Link, from what I gather if I have a Eurail card (is this my pass??) it is free.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: Also, what is the easiest way to get to Greece? I am having troubles getting from the Czech/Austrain region down there, because I plan on going up Italy, then through the French Riviera after Greece. Austria-Greece-Italy-France, is what I am planning, but I am having difficulties.

Which ferry companies honor the railpass and other bonuses that come with the railpass seem to change every year, but a complete list of the bonuses should come with your railpass. This pasted from Raileurope.com (which I don’t normally use, but they have easier to find information on the bonuses right now):

Quote:
Greece and Italy
If the Eurail Pass is valid in Greece and Italy

Ferries

* Free ferry crossings from Patras and Igoumenitsa to Ancona and Bari (Italy) operated by Superfast Ferries and Blue Star Ferries. Mid season surcharge: June and September: € 15 per person; High season surcharge: July and August: € 30 per person. Port taxes are extra. * Free deck passage on the ferry crossings from Patras and Igoumenitsa to Ancona (Italy) and from Patras, Igoumenitsa and Corfu to Venice (Italy) operated by Minoan Lines. Mid season surcharge: June and September: € 16 per person; High season surcharge July and August: € 26 per person. There is a 50% discount on upgrades. Embarkation upon availability.

Certain restriction may apply. Passengers must check with the participating company to ensure that service is still available and passes accepted. A surcharge and port taxes may be charged locally. Participating company may decide to withdraw their offer at any time without advance notice.

The railpass only covers “deck passage.” You will have to pay extra if you want a cabin. The overnight ferry counts as 1 day of your railpass and you can choose which day (departure day or arrival day). You usually have to deal directly with the ferry company (as opposed to through the hundreds of travel agents that sell ferry tickets on-line or in kiosks and offices all over the port towns) to use the railpass. The last information I read was that you had to appear in person at the ferry company office.

Other ferry lines offer discounts with the railpass. A discount doesn’t use a day of the railpass

Quote:
25% reduction is offered during High Season (June 15 to September 15) on the standard passenger fares and cabin fares on the crossings from Patras to Brindisi (Italy), operated by HML (Hellenic Mediterranean Lines). No reduction on De-Luxe cabins. 50% reduction is offered on passenger fares and cabin fares on the crossings from Patras to Brindisi outside of High Season.
Also from raileurope.

You may find it cheaper and easier to fly to Greece from Austria and then take the ferry to Italy.

Yeah, it seems I can get to Greece from Italy, and use a day on my pass, or pay or both, not 100% sure, but they sent me an email so I can just review that. I was planning to fly from Austria to Greece, because I don’t know how I could rail it, but I can’t find any cheap flights, help?!

What I can do is from Vienna, rail it to Milan, then fly from Milan to Athens for 29.40 Euro visa easyJet.

I’m not sure where you plan to go in Greece, but Air Berlin flies from various airports in Austria to Rhodes, Corfu and other Greek islands. If you’re planning to visit the islands you could fly to one and then ferry back to Athens/Pireaus. If you’re not planning to visit the islands, then I’d cut Greece from your trip. I think we flew Turkish air from Vienna to Athens.

I’m not sure exactly where you want to go in Greece, but also check Sky Europe. I know they fly from both Vienna and Prague to Athens & Thessaloniki: http://www.skyeurope…

Yes, they have flights from exactly your region – from Prague, Vienna or Bratislava to Athens and Thessaloniki. When searching for the cheapest ticket, don’t forget to try all six possibilities (BTS to ATH, VIE to ATH, PRG to ATH, BTS to SKG, VIE to SKG, PRG to SKG) in order to find the cheapest flight. Anyway, I’ve flown with SkyEurope six times this year and their service and aircrafts are excellent.

If you have any questions about Prague or Czech and Slovak republics, ask me.

Are Prague, Vienna, and Brat. all relatively close then? On the map I see Vienna and Bratislava are nearby, and I have had recommendation to take a daytrip to Bratislava, but Vienna/Brat. seem to be a good distant from Prague.

Vienna and Bratislava are 60 km apart, Prague is about 350 km from either Vienna or Bratislava. The journey is 1 hour between Vienna and Bratislava, and about 4.5-5 hours from Bratislava or Vienna to Prague. For approx. 12-18 euros, you can get a bus from Prague to Bratislava or Vienna.

If you have any questions about Prague or Czech and Slovak republics, ask me.

Hello,

Im headed to Bratislava/Vienna from Prague/Berlin but I wanted to make my way back up to Krakow for a couple of days and then to Budapest and on down to Croatia. Any travels tips? I was looking into traveling by Eurocity rail from Bratislava to Krakow but Im not sure I can buy the tickets online because I cant seem to find the magic english button on the website. Im also having a bit of a hard time finding info on how to get to Croatia from Krakow via Budapest (I wanted to end up in Zadar or Split?) and was wondering if anyone has any info?
On a similar note, from Croatia Id like to travel down the Adriatic Coast to Greece and on to Turkey (as cheaply as possible) any suggestions? I know its a lot of questions but anything helps!
Thanks Smile

Hi,

the main question is: WHEN are you planning to do this trip? In August, or later in the year? That’s important, because direct overnight train from Krakow to Budapest, as well as direct sleeper train from Bratislava to Split runs in summer only.

The train from Bratislava to Krakow is not an EuroCity, just a regular fast train. The tickets for this trip can be bought on the day of the departure in the ticket office in Bratislava, where you can also pay with a credit card. Alas, it’s impossible to buy them online, online ticket sales on Slovak railways is in beta testing yet and only domestic tickets are sold this way so far. But this train is usually half-empty, no need to fear you won’t get aboard.

If you travel in August, I’d recommend to travel from Prague to Krakow on an overnighter, then Krakow to Budapest on overnighter, then Budapest to Bratislava (2.5 hours’ trip, runs every two hours) and then Bratislava to Split (direct sleeper, but the journey takes almost 24 hours). If you don’t feel that comfy with the idea of spending a day on a train, try www.skyeurope.com and find some cheap flight from Prague, Vienna or Bratislava to Split (tickets start at 29 euros, but there is a EUR12 hidden fee for baggage). That’s still cheaper than any form of land transport, but make your reservation soon in order to get that price.

If you have any questions about Prague or Czech and Slovak republics, ask me.
