Hey everyone,
I am leaving for my Eurotrip with my buddy in 15 days!!
Everything is finalized, including our itinerary, except Morocco. We know we want to go there, and we have budgeted 2.5-4 days to do it, but we aren’t sure where to go. Help/advice please
Tangier – We are coming over from Algeciras to here, and were considering staying here in the first place because it is on the water, but people were saying it’s not great?
Fez – Don’t know too much about it, but we would like to stay on the water if possible.
Marrakech – Definitely too far out of the way, I think.
Rabat – Also thought of staying here, and it’s on the water. Good idea?
Any experts out there on Morocco? Which cities to visit and general tips about Morocco since it is unlike the rest of Europe would be awesome!
Thanks!

Fez and Marrakech are great to visit but they are both inland cities. From all indications, you apparently prefer a Beach resort. Rabat would be my preference: It’s Morocco’s Capital, a ‘Royal’ City with a walkable (but walled-in) Medina. Actually, parts of the movie: Blackhawk Down were filmed along the coastline near Rabat and in Rabat itself. A few km down the Coast from Rabat ville you find Temera Plage, a great beach. I don’t know if there are any hotels on the beach; but that would not be unlikely further down the coast toward Casablanca: Mohammedia, for example.
No to Tanger. Just keep moving. I’m not so sure about the beaches, but I have stayed in Asilah which is a small town on the water (I believe between Rabat and Tanger). It’s nice, but def small and not too much in the way of nice beaches. Lots of coastline though. Everyone usually talks about Essaouira and other nearby towns for beaches but that’s a lot further south than you probably want to go. Honestly, if I had only 3 days to come into Morocco, I would go to Chefchaouen. It’s in the mountains, not on the water, but it’s a gorgeous small town where everything is painted blue.
Alright. That all sounds good and thanks for the fast responses.
Here is our plan:
-Ferry from Algeciras to Tangier
-Bus to Chefchaouen (2 Nights)
-Bus to Fez (day in Fez or perhaps one night)
-Bus/Train to Rabat (1 night in Rabat)
-Flight from Casablanca to Lisbon
All in all, it’s about four days.
delfrio, or anyone else, anywhere specific we should stay in Chefchaouen? Between the two of us, we have about $100US to spend/night. We would love an awesome view but be close to the medina. Where did you stay?
Is that initerary doable for Morocco?
Thanks again guys!
I would think that’s generally doable, though the travel days will cut short the amount of time you have to sightsee on arrival. I don’t know how long the bus from Tanger to Chaouen takes, but I do know you have to transfer once. When we went, we took the ferry from Algeciras to Ceuta not Tanger. From there Chaouen is closer, and we hired a taxi to drive there (memory is fuzzy but I think it was about an hour for $20). There is also probably taxi service from Tanger which could be a good deal if you split it with other people. It may seem unusual to go that far in a taxi, but it’s pretty common.
As for places to stay, I don’t remember where we stayed but it was in the medina and it was cheap (price, the conditions were pretty nice). Not much in the way of views though. If you find a place in the main square you can probably get better views but the cost will be higher. It’s good to have an idea of where you want to stay before you go because there will be a lot of people who want to “help you find a room” (they would like some money for this service of course). The medina is pretty confusing at first though, so if someone does help you find your hotel, tip them and think about the time you didn’t waste wandering around lost. If the place you decided on ahead of time doesn’t look acceptable, you could wander to the main square and find other hotels by sight.
Have fun.
