Nafplio is a lovely city in the Peloponnese region. The renovated old quarter sports lots of graceful 19th century buildings. Restaurants and cafes lline the waterfront, and are packed with people in the summer evenings (particularly weekends because Nafplio is a popular weekend getaway for Athenians).

Nafplio is a great side-trip from Athens. The nearby historical sites of Epidaurus and Mycenae are also worth a look.
