Normal way to sightseeing in Vienna

Not sure if I would get time, but certainly would like to do some sightseeing in Vienna. How expensive is public transportation? Do they have subways?

There are trams, subway (u-bahn) elevated/suburban light rail trains (s-bahn) and buses — all use the same ticket system. There are also automated stations to rent a bike.
