I am interested in buying a France-Germany-Italy Eurail pass and going from Venice-Munich by train with it. I realize I would have to pass through Austria for this, however I once read somewhere that Salzburg, Austria is included in with Germany’s railpass, and this would be the city that the train would pass through, I imagine. Does this mean I can use the pass without having to buy an extra part to cover the Austria leg?
The Salzburg being incl. with Germany is not on Eurail’s website, but I know for a fact that sometimes cities outside the country are included bc Geneva, Switzerland was included in the France-Benelux pass we got last summer.
I’m just wondering if anyone has like, the paperwork from their germany rail pass in which they could look this information up for me…. that would be great! Thanks!

Look at a map. A Eurail pass covers some “border cities.” Salzburg is considered a “border city” to Germany, not Italy. You could go from Berlin to Salzburg on a pass that covered Germany but not Austria and you wouldn’t have to pay extra for the tiny portion of the route between the German border and Salzburg. Your route covers virtually the entire length and width of Austria — you’re not going to get that for free.
Well, basically I’m trying to find the cheapest way through Austria without having to add the country to my rail pass as I will not be spending any time there (just transiting through). If I went through the “tail” of Austria which touches Switzerland, and transit through Innsbruck instead, do you think it would be pretty cheap? That’s not a very large portion of land.
Were you planning on a three country select pass? If so, I’d just add Austria for $30-$35. I can’t imagine the cost of the ticket through Austria being less than that, and you won’t have to worry about booking the extra ticket.
I agree with Augustin. You wouldn’t need to add any travel days.
