Has anyone been to the State Opera House in Vienna- and if so- are all the seats good? Someone told me to be sure to see an opera while I’m there, and there are tickets for 10 euros- just wondering if i will be able to see/hear anything.. but that price is wonderful, if it’s the case that there is no bad seat- which is the case in many theatres here in the USA.

Any feedback would be great and suggestions of stuff to do while in Vienna- just vienna Smile It’s cut short, but I am doing Salzburg at another time.. so no clue what to do really once I get to these cities I’m going to. Smile

I’ve never been, but if you love opera, 10 euros can’t be beat.

My advice: don’t go there just because someone told you that you should go to an opera while in Vienna. Go because you truly enjoy opera. Otherwise, your time is better spend doing/checking out something else that you’d enjoy. Vienna is, after all, one of Europe’s architectural gem cities.

I found the website for the Vienna State Opera (Wiener Staatsoper) http://www.wiener-st… Browse the website’s English-language version, see if you can find maybe a map of how the seats are laid out, and see if you can find out which seats these tickets are for.

I’ve been to the Staatsoper several times.

10 Euros actually seems expensive compared to what I paid. But, without checking the ticket prices, I suspect a 10 Euro seat will be pretty bad. What you go for is the standing room. They have hundreds of places, but the first 80 or so (can’t remember the exact number) are fantastic. You’re right behind the Royal Box at the rear of the circle – heaps better than many much much more expensive seats. To get a standing room ticket you need to line up on the day. Unless you are first there the queue is easy to spot, it forms on the western side of the building. Its one ticket per person and you can’t mind a place for someone. As the name suggest you have to stand, but theres a rail in front of you you can lean on. They let you in about an hour before and you can tie a scarf to mark your position and come back just before curtaincall. Enough locals turn up every night that the whole thing is self regulating – after a couple of hours in the queue everyone knows exactly where their place is.

AS Luv the Beach points out, the next question is should you go? Use the website to check whats on. If you’ve never been to the Opera before you what something populist, anything by Mozart or Pucinni is worth a go. Note that these’ll be more popular – I’d advise getting there about four hours in advance.I’ll personally be in Vienna myself in late September for a couple of nights, I’ve already checked out whats on, can’t remember what, but it wasn’t good enough to be worth me standing in line.

As to what else to do in Vienna what are your interests? Into art, architechure, museums? Good military museum if thats your cup of tea.

I have never been to the opera before. But I love going to: ballet, plays, musicals, concerts- so I am sure an opera would be on my list of likes. i’ve always wanted to go to one here.. guess that’s why people told me to go to one while in Vienna. The one playing when I am there is LONG, and seems to have been re-done in parts, but figure it might be a good experience- my friend said it would be cheaper to buy my tickets thee, but I would have to wait in line, don’t know if i want to spend a day waiting in line, if I can buy them online for only 10 euros- just hopefully the seats won’t be too awful..

I found the price and seat plan here: www.staatsoper.at/Co…
I couldn’t work out exactly which ones are the 9 & 10 euro seats, but they’ll be high up, on the sides, and in the back rows. However for 10 euros unless its a restricted view what the hell?

Vienna is not considered worth going to because of the standard of the company and the stupidly cheap excellent standing room. The theatre itself is’nt that great an experience – a bomb came through the ceiling in 1945 and the restoration was functional reather than decorative. Where else are you going? Budapest and Prague have much more atmospheric opera houses and can be real cheap.

Whats playings? Beware of anthing post 1910.

I was there last year in September, and the tickets for the standing room only are really cheap. I am thinking 5 Euros or less. With the budget I was on, there is no way I would have gone if it was over a few bucks USD. You have to get to the box office at a certain time and wait a little bit to get the tix. Let’s put it this way, I waited in line for maybe and hour and got tix to the opera that night. I ended up leaving at Intermission. Worth checking out though!
